This time of year is always the hardest for me to get dressed. The transition from winter to spring is the most difficult to put outfits together for. In the mornings it is freezing, and then by the afternoon you are sweating, only to start shivering again when the sun starts to go down. The weather is all over the place and each day brings something different.
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE spring! I love when the flowers start to bloom, the temps warm up, and I love warm weather fashion. I would take dresses and skirts over sweaters any day. Also March is my birthday month, so that is just the icing on the cake.
I pulled together some transitional pieces that I think every girl needs in her closet while we move into spring.
White Denim
My favorite trick for when my wardrobe is feeling a bit “bleh” is to simply swap out my current dark skinny jeans for white ones or a lighter wash! No matter what you pair them with, they really do go a long way in “brightening up” your outfit. Y’all know I am an avid Madewell denim girl, so you can find me sporting their white jeans all spring/summer long. White denim are so versatile as well. During a colder temps you can pair with a sweater and OTK boots. When spring decides to show its colors, a lightweight top or silk blouse and sneakers is the way to go.
Boyfriend Blazer
Transitioning into spring is the time for lightweight jackets. Denim, leather, I find myself sporting lightweight jackets pretty much every day. Especially when the mornings are chilly. I have been loving the boyfriend blazer trend. Try your boyfriend blazer as a jacket for a classic and easy transition layer. Pair it over a graphic t-shirt and skirt for a thrown together, yet sophisticated look. Even swapping out the skirt for a pair of denim or paper bag shorts would be cute.
T-shirt Dress
I think a t-shirt dress is a must in every closet no matter the season. They are comfy, cute, and easy to style. You can tie a denim jacket around your waist with sneakers for an easy transition look. Throw on a jacket or cardigan and booties if the temps are still colder. I love a t-shirt dress because it is just like wearing a big t-shirt that you would wear to bed in public. It is the most acceptable way to walk around in a shirt and no pants and I am here for it.
Mules
I have found myself collecting more and more mules to add to my closet over the years. They are comfortable, easy to walk in, and add a element of class to any look. During the time between winter and spring these are the perfect shoes when you are sick of your booties, but still need to keep your toes warm. I love mules paired with denim. Flat, heeled, neutral, or color I am here for all the mules.
Trench Coat
A classic in any wardrobe – a trench coat is just timeless. I have been wanting a camel one for years, and I think this is going to be the year I take the dive and get one. I have a black one and it is so sleek. They are lightweight, but will also keep you warm. If you live in the north I am sure you are sick of wearing your parka and a trench would be a breath of fresh air. A trench coat is the perfect weight and length for transitional weather, especially if you need to spice up your closet. This is a key piece to throw on over a flirty dress for when it’s too cold to stand alone.
Lightweight Sweaters
By this time of year I do not need to even see a chunky cozy sweater. But sometimes it is still cold enough that a sweater is needed. I tend to stock up on lightweight sweaters, especially from H&M. These are great because they will keep you warm without making you sweat under a turtleneck. When the temperatures do rise a lightweight sweater is perfect to pair with shorts or a skirt. When looking for lightweight sweaters I tend to lean to more colorful lighter colors. Think pastels, and colors that make you happy. I love blush for spring. It is so versatile and you can pair with so many other colors without clashing. Blush is practically a neutral in my wardrobe.
Colorful Accessories
I feel like the winter months have a palette of neutrals, and dark colors. One of my favorite thing about spring is that the flowers begin to bloom. I feel like the world gets colorful again after winter. Your wardrobe should do the same. Don’t get me wrong there is a time and place for neutrals, however I feel like spring is a time to refresh and brighten up your closet. I think that adding pops of colors in your accessories is a great way to do this. Sport a pair of colorful bold earrings, fun sunnies, or a patterned neck scarf.
Rain boots
One thing that comes with the spring is rain. April showers bring May flowers am I right? However, your rain gear in no way needs to be boring. By adding a fun pair of rain boots is a good way to spice up a gray and dreary spring day. We have had so much rain in New Orleans this winter. It rains here way more than I ever would’ve thought. I have learned that just because it is rainy your outfit doesn’t need to fall apart. I have found ways to be stylish on rainy days and cute rain boots are the start. You can’t control the weather, especially in the springtime when it is bound to rain more than normal.
What are you favorite transitional pieces in your closet??
