Today is National Picnic Day! Who knew there was a day dedicated to picnics, but I am all over it because I love a good picnic!
Mitch and I celebrated accordingly with our own little spin on a picnic.
We grabbed a blanket, packed some goodies and headed out to the sunshine.
We have been utilizing picnics during this quarantine as a way to get out of the house and get some fresh air. Also I just feel like food tastes better outside.
We have lucked out with gorgeous weather down here in New Orleans, so we are blessed enough to be able to spend times outdoors – social distancing of course.
Once I found out it was National Picnic Day I immediately knew this was a great quarantine activity! Frankly, a picnic is a great activity any warm day! Realizing that we don’t have much time left in New Orleans, I thought it would be fun to get some NOLA staples and head to our favorite park for a southern picnic.
We headed to City Park. It is just like Central Park in NYC, but south! There is so much to do and makes for a great spot for a picnic. We picked a spot under my favorite oak trees with Spanish moss. We have to soak up this scenery before we leave!
When it comes to food – which is the most important park of the picnic, we decided to go the easy route and pick up some local food instead of trying to cook ourselves. If you have been following along you know that we have been eating around the world, you can read a whole post about it here!
When you think of New Orleans during the springtime, you think crawfish. So that is exactly what we had for our southern picnic. We picked up some crawdaddy’s and boiled shrimp. They both were so fresh and yummy.
Mitch did make his cajun dip that we both LOVE before we picked up the rest of the food. It is similar to yum yum sauce, but with a twist. Mitch combines ketchup, mayo, and hot sauce. It is perfect on boiled seafood!
We also picked up a baguette, which in my opinion is the perfect picnic bread and should be at every picnic. It reminds me of being in Paris and just pulling pieces off of hot fresh bread. We grabbed some fresh fruit as well because fruit and warm weather go hand in hand. For dessert we had yogurt covered pretzels which is a personal favorite of mine!
We packed a cooler with some beer and headed to City Park!
We don’t have a picnic basket, but I’m thinking after this picnic we need to get one! We put the drinks and fruit in the cooler, and then the rest in a big tote bag. It was a short drive to City Park, so we didn’t have to lug all the stuff too far! Definitely bring a cooler of some type when you go on a picnic to make sure things stay cool and don’t spoil. Also remember LOTS of napkins! Especially if you are eating something messy like we did!
After we ate, we enjoyed the sun and each other’s company watching the world go by. If you are feeling crazy inside the 4 walls of your house, get out, get some fresh air and have a picnic!
Happy National Picnic Day!
