How To Navigate Valentine’s Day Single

02.09.23Lifestyle4

I’m just going to get this part out of the way – being single on Valentine’s Day is like being single every other day of the year – it is not a big deal.

February is the month where roses, red hearts, cupid and such are being thrown at you in all directions. Sometimes it can be a hard time of year if you don’t have a romantic partner. I am going on my 3rd Valentine’s Day in a row without a Valentine, and you know what that is ok!

I am not going to lie that sometimes being one of the only single friends is hard. You try not to compare your life to their’s, but sometimes it is hard not too. Whether friends are planning their own weddings, trying to have children, or hoping for a proposal soon – it feels like I don’t have much to offer in those conversations because I am not in that point in my life. Sometimes you are always trying to scramble for a plus one or know that you will just be the odd man out because everyone else is already coupled up.

But on the other side, I am thriving in my single-ness. I hear friends complain about their partners, or not being able to make plans or certain things and I value that I only have to focus on me and my dreams at this point. I love that I can be completely and utterly selfish!

Yes, I am actively dating with purpose to find my match (my friends LOVE to hear about my latest dating stories). I want nothing more than to find a partner to share the rest of my life with, settle down, and start a family. But I also am not rushing the process or forcing something to work when it might not.

So while I might be single yet again on another Valentine’s Day, here are so tips and tricks if you to are celebrating solo this year!

Enjoy a Beauty Treatment

Looking good and feeling good go hand in hand. Spoil yourself with a haircut, blowout, mani-pedi, or massage. I always love to treat myself with a facial during this time of year so I can be glowing as I eat my heart shaped pizza.

Get Take Out From Your Favorite Restaurant

I personally cannot get myself to go out alone on Valentine’s Day, so I will opt for take out. But make it special – light some candles, open that bottle of wine you’ve been waiting for a good occasion to open, and put on a rom com and spend the night enjoying some of your favorite food!

Host a Singles-Only Dinner Party

Spending time with friends is a great celebration of love that doesn’t involve romance. Invite all your favorite single people over, cook an amazing dinner, pop some bubbly, and toast to your independence.

Buy Yourself Flowers

*Queue Miley’s new song. I always buy myself flowers around Valentine’s Day because they are beautiful and make me happy. I encourage you to do the same!

Plan a Galentine’s Day

Even if your friends are relationship’d up, plan ahead to make separate plans with them to have the best type of celebration there is: Galentine’s Day. Sip on some fun drinks, munch on little snacks, and take the time to appreciate the wonderful friendships you have with the women in your life.

Get Out of Town

If you are recently single, or the thought of being at home during Valentine’s Day weekend is dreadful. No one says you have to stay here. Plan a weekend getaway with a friend or family member, or go on your own. Visit somewhere new or travel to a favorite destination where you can bask in nostalgia.

Cook a Fancy Dinner for Your Parents

What better way to celebrate love than to spend quality time with your parents? Have them forgo a traditional dinner out and cook for them instead. Set the table, light candles, and open a good bottle of wine.

Go to a Comedy Show

Grab a girlfriend or your mom and head out for a night of humor. Comedy shows are often full of self-effacing humor, and laughing is one of the best ways to boost your mood. If you don’t feel like going out, stream one of the latest specials on Netflix.

Get Some Retail Therapy In

One of the best parts about being single on Valentine’s Day is that you don’t have to pretend to be excited about a gift from a S.O. that you actually didn’t like. I mean, who knows you better than you? Need some new jewelry? Clothes? Makeup? Nothing feels better than gifting yourself something you know you’re going to love.

Avoid Social Media

Make V-day a phone-free day. Stalking your ex on social media to see how they’re celebrating with their new partner is not going to make you feel happy or confident, and neither are all the happy couple photos clogging up your feed. Or post a bomb selfie because you look and feel great!

Have a Regular Day

You don’t even have to do anything special on Valentine’s Day to get through it. Wake up whenever you usually do, brush your teeth, have some breakfast, and go about your day just like it was any other. Because sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself to avoid feeling sad is to pretend that the holiday doesn’t even exist. There’s always next year!

Happy Valentine’s Day to all my fellow single girlies out there! Cupid is just waiting till next year!
