It’s a fact: Fall is the seasonal equivalent of a great big hug. The apple crumb pie, the kaleidoscopic foliage, the chance to wear sweaters again—the comfy vibes just keep coming. Making the most of the season means bringing that sense of snugglyness inside— including your home. Unlike the holiday season—when I will quite literally hand over a full paycheck in the name of channeling Buddy The Elf with new ornaments, twinkle lights (always more twinkle lights), and a fresh garland— I tend to like to decorate for fall with a more overall cozy theme.
Turning your home into a cozy fall oasis just makes my heart happy. Making simple changes around my home to welcome the new season and prepare for several months of hunkering down, hosting dinner parties, and indulging in movie nights on the couch. Below, I’m sharing six simple ways to make your home cozy just in time for fall.
1. Add fall aromas all around
While you can bake them on repeat, you can’t have a pumpkin or apple pie in the oven all the time. But you can do the next best thing: Fill your home with the sweet and spicy scents of the season by lighting a candle or using a diffuser. Whatever your fall scent of choice may be—pumpkin, cinnamon, nutmeg, apple pie—there’s a candle to bring it to life. This way, wafts of toasty, roast-y goodness will float through your kitchen (and the rest of your Our sense of smell is one of the biggest triggers of memories and nostalgia, and what would autumn be without a little reminiscing?
2. Opt for candlelight
When the temperatures start to drop, I immediately feel the need to make everything warm and cozy. Candlelight is a great way to do this. Not only will your house smell like fall (reference #1), a dim lighting will set the mood. I think candlelight is calming. Lighting them at night, popping a movie in, enjoying a glass of wine is the perfect way to unwind after a long day.
3. Bring in layers
The term “fall layers” usually refers to jackets and sweaters, but fashion isn’t the only area where you can layer up. Bringing in additional textures to your home brings a cozier vibe that feels warm and inviting, leaving you happy to trade nights on the patio with evenings on the couch. From chunky knit blankets to velvet throw pillows, I can’t help but opt for the “more is more” approach when it comes to fall home decor.
4. Put a few gord-geous finds around
Time to put your fruit bowl full of summery fruits and veggies away and instead decorate with Mother Nature’s cutest and most colorful fall creation—mini gourds—. Dress up your countertop, coffee table, mantel or kitchen table with a festive touch. Place them on your open shelving for an unexpected pop. They come in so many iterations (shapes, colors, sizes) and pack a ton of seasonal charm. This is personally my favorite way to decorate for fall. I have a glass blown pumpkin collection that I am starting. I pick one out every year. It is super special to me to see my collection grow.
5. Swap flowers for autumn branches
Fall is the perfect time to bring the outside in, and there’s no need to spend the big bucks doing so. Trust me, after you forage your backyard for a few tall branches of autumn leaves, you’ll suddenly feel like you’re roaming through the New England countryside. Fill vases or pitchers with fall finds. I personally like to visit the local farmers market to pick out some fall lovelies (less bugs and critters!). These natural materials evoke all the rustic flair without much fuss.
6. Accent with rust and copper tones
Copper adds a natural warmth to your living space, giving a subtle nod to the autumn color change. You can bring in this rust-colored hue through simple accessories like a metal vase, tea kettle, or candlestick holders or by opting for rust-colored fabrics in an accent pillow, rug, or tabletop linens. Nothing says fall comfiness like a good old-fashioned plaid fabric accent. Warm up your kitchen table with a tablecloth, placemats, or napkins. Throw a plaid blanket over your couch, or add a plaid accent pillow. And, you don’t have to stick with the same pattern, either. Mixing and matching colors and patterns lends a contemporary vibe.
