Up next on my Chicago Suburbs Guide is Arlington Heights, IL. Arlington Heights is a suburb about 25 mins northwest of the city of Chicago. I worked in Arlington Heights, and I lived in Arlington Heights for a hot minute, so I am quite familiar with this gem of a suburb.
In case you missed my first Chicago Suburb Guide on Geneva, IL check that out here!
Arlington Heights is a very nice area, and their downtown area is so charming. There is a Metra Stop right at downtown Arlington Heights on the Pacific Northwest line so it is super convenient. Also downtown Palatine which is the next town over is pretty notable as well.
What To Do
Shopping
You know that I would of course include a shopping section on any city/travel guide that I write. Arlington Heights does not have boutique after boutique, but there is some shopping. The big Woodfield Mall is in Schaumburg which is the next town over. You will find everything your heart desires around Woodfield, from shops to restaurants to bars!
In downtown Arlington Heights, there is a shopping center that has more big box names like Loft, Bath and Body Works, and Yankee Candle. However, y’all know how much I love my boutiques and they have quite a good selection of them downtown Arlington Heights. I listed out some of my favorites!
Arlington International Racecourse
My old place of employment! Arlington will ALWAYS have a very special place in my heart for many many reasons. Now there is a high chance, that if you are reading this after summer 2021, that Arlington Racetrack will no longer exist. However, be sure to go at least one time this summer just in case it is your last chance. Arlington is a beautiful thoroughbred horse racing track. The grounds are just immaculate, and it is always a fun summer day! Be sure to stop for a drink at Jimmy D’s across the street after and chat with their amazing track announcer John G. Dooley!
Where To Eat
Breakfast/Brunch
- Mr. Allison’s Restaurant: For the biggest, cheapest, and some of the best breakfast in Arlington Heights, check out this old time diner.
- Honey Jam Cafe: Especially if you are heading to the track for the day, Honey Jam is great breakfast/brunch stop beforehand because it is literally across the street! With a great menu, this is a good option. Be sure to try their speciality pancakes!
- Scratchboard Kitchen: This female owned scratch-made, locally sourced breakfast/lunch spot is a must try if you are in the area. Not only is it so aesthetically pleasing, you know you are showing support to the local farmers. Be sure to check out their craft beer, curated wine list, and specialty cocktails as well – mimosas and brunch just go hand in hand!
- Egg Harbor: With some delicious biscuits and gravy (my favorite), Egg Harbor is a cute breakfast place in Arlington Heights. With a lot of traditional breakfast options – everyone in your party will find something to make them happy.
- Walker Bros Original Pancake House: If you want some really really good pancakes, then Walker Bros is a must try! I prefer their chocolate chip. It is a traditional, homey and cozy breakfast joint.
- Around Cafe – A local coffee shop that is just too adorable to skip. The best chai tea and super unique donuts with various toppings and bubble tea. Around is a very easygoing relaxed coffee shop and I love it.
- Spunky Dunkers: If you are looking for donuts, look no further. This classic donut shoppe is the local’s go to spot.
Lunch/Dinner
- Passero: This small trattoria is a fusion of Italian and American flavors. With an impressive wine and craft beer list, and a menu that is delicious. Get the burrata – SO yummy! This would be a great light lunch spot or cute date night option.
- Salsa 17: If you want to eat at the most adorable Mexican restaurant, then Salsa 17 is for you. Their outdoor patio is in an alley way, and you feel like you have been transported to Mexico. Two things that are a must have when we eat here are the margaritas and guacamole. Their table side guacamole is a non-negotiable.
- Cortland’s Garage: If you are in the mood for a good juicy burger, than Cortland’s Garage is the place for you, also if you like cheese curds! With a great outside patio with tons of seating, and a massive bar inside, this place just screams cool. This is a great bar to grab a drink at as well.
- La Tasca: My FAVORITE restaurant in Arlington Heights! La Tasca is a tapas restaurant, and in my opinion is the best place to have dinner in Arlington Heights. Of course start the night off with sangria, and then enjoy a bunch of different tapas and share with the group. A few of my favorite are Patatas Bravas, Empanada de Carne, Croquetas de Pollo, Garlic Shrimp, and Crab Cakes.
- Shakou: An upscale sushi restaurant. I am not a sushi fan, but I hear nothing but great things about this place!
- Mago Grill and Cantina: Another good Mexican Restaurant. Pricey in my opinion, but they have good tacos.
- AltThai: My go to Thai spot whenever I am in Arlington Heights.
- Armands: If you are in the mood for some pizza, I’d head to Armands. Claimed as Chicago’s best thin crust!
- Carlos and Carlos: For a fancy date night, or just in the mood for some good Italian. This classic fine-dining restaurant serves Italian dishes with French influences. Very nice, and very yummy!
Nightlife
- Arlington Ale House: On the 3rd level of the Metropolis, and right over Magos, Arlington Ale House has the coolest vibe with live music Friday and Saturdays, an outdoor patio, arcade games, and pool. This is definitely my favorite bar in downtown Arlington Heights.
- Peggy Kinanne’s: A traditional Irish pub, and a staple in downtown Arlington. Be sure to check out their trivia night on Thursday’s at 7:30pm.
- Tuscan Market & Wine Shop: Looking for a wine bar? I got you. This low-key, chill vibes wine bar is the perfect place to share a bottle with friends, or try something new.
- Beer On The Wall: Coffee shop concept, but make it beer? Sign me up. This place looks super cool, and you bet I will visit next time when I am in Arlington Heights.
- Hey Nonny: Part intimate live music bar, part farm to table midwestern bistro, Hey Nonny is a guaranteed good time. I love when a bar has live music, so this place is right up my alley.
- Kahala Koa: Want to feel like you are on a tropical island? This tiki bar will transport you to paradise in no time. With a menu full of tropical drinks, this place is ought to be a good time!
- Jimmy D’s District: Across the street from Arlington park, this is the go to spot after the races. Enjoy a beer with some of the jockeys, trainers, and employees of the track. Everyone is like a big happy family there!
Let me know if I missed any of your favorites or if you love any of these places as much as I do!

This is an incredible list. That guacamole looks amazing, I would totally devour it! But that sign about the beer is the best. Now I have a whole new list of restaurants to hit. Thanks for the post, good stuff.
