Happy National Donut day! Today is a day dedicated to the small circular fried dough covered in frosting and sprinkles. I am a HUGE donut fan, and I like tend to think of myself as a donut connoisseur. Whenever I am traveling I love finding the “it” donut place in town. I do not discriminate when it comes to donuts – glazed, old fashioned, cronut, sprinkles, I like them all! With it being National Donut Day I thought it would be fun to round up my top 5 favorite donuts in the city of Chicago! These tasty donuts should be high on your list if you are looking for some fried dough love in the Windy City.
Stan’s Donuts and Coffee is a Chicago classic, opening in 2014 it stole the hearts of Chicagoans making it a favorite to locals. Stan’s offers a wide range of flavors, a few being: Peanut Butter Pocket, Lemon Pistachio, Apple Fritter, and cherry glazed. However they do the classics wonderfully – the vanilla sprinkle is to die for and their simple old fashioned donut is as close to perfection as one can get. For all of you gluten free folks – they do offer gluten free donuts, but personally gimme all the gluten in my donut.
Hands down, 100% the best glazed donut I have ever had. There was a Do-Rite on my way to work when I worked in the Loop and every morning I was tempted to stop to get one because it smelled so dang good. The whole block is filled with the sweet smell. They serve their glazed donuts warm, and they just melt in your mouth. A few other favorites of mine here are the red velvet and cinnamon sugar. I have heard nothing but good things about the maple bacon donut with actual candied bacon on it, but I just stick to more of the classics at Do-Rite.
Famous for their bomboloni’s (bomb-bo-loni), a holeless Italian doughnut infused with various filling flavors this place is a must-see if you’re in Chicago. Original, salted caramel, raspberry vanilla bean custard, Nutella, and s’mores are some of the flavors of these magical bomboloni’s. Can I try them all? I am normally not a huge fan of filled donuts, because I prefer my donuts to have a hole in the middle. But BomboBar get so much hype and I always see pictures of their masterpieces on Instagram. Yes, BomboBar is extremely instagrammable. They have these extravagant milkshakes called Cooler Chocolates, and let me tell you that is what you need to order when you go. Like how delicious does that s’mores one look!?
Combine my two favorite things – donuts and ice cream – and you have Firecakes. Firecakes is home to donut ice cream sandwiches. Yes you read that right, an ice cream sandwich made out of donuts. These babies are so yummy, and the perfect summer treat. You can even make your own with different kinds of donuts, ice cream flavors, and toppings. Firecakes also has a ton of different kinds of donuts. Rumor has it they have a margarita donut, and I think I need a dozen of those ASAP.
With a line usually out the door on Saturday mornings, Doughnut Vault serves old-fashion donuts with only a limited amount to ensure the freshest donuts in the city. If you like a good old-fashion cake donut, then the Doughnut Vault is for you. There is a daily speciality donut flavor each day of the week. The storefront is just the most charming, and the interior of this little shop is so cute.
You bet I will be indulging in a donut or five on this holiday. You can pick up a free donut at Dunkin Donuts and Krispee Kreme today. Enjoy your donuts y’all!
