Something about a drive in movie on a warm summer night. I personally love drive in movies, and when I saw that there was a local one in Kentucky, I knew Mitch and I had to at least once this summer!
This was Mitch’s first drive in movie of his life so I knew I had to make it special. We went all out – our setup, snacks, everything!
We went to Sauerbeck Family Drive In in La Grange, KY. It was about a 25 minute drive from us in Louisville, and I thought it would be the perfect date night! I feel like every time I go to the drive in, I am transported back in time. I love the old movie previews, and the whole feel of drive ins.
Drive ins have gained back their popularity thanks to covid. Since movie theaters are closed, people have been gravitating towards drive ins where they can still get the cinema experience while maintaining social distancing and keeping everyone safe.
We saw a double feature of Beauty and the Beast and Iron Man. It was only $15 per vehicle, and you could pay $5 to bring in your own food. So for only $20 you have a pretty cheap date night! I have 34 other date ideas for this summer here! Give it a read!
Since this was Mitch’s first drive in movie, I knew I wanted to make it special, and since he drives a pick up truck, I had the perfect idea!
Setup
The setup for your movie is key at the drive in. Many people bring lawn chairs and pop their trunk. Some sit on the hoods of their car, or the bed of their truck. Others might just park their car forward and stay in their seats and watch from inside the car. However, Mitch and I went ALL OUT!
For our setup, we backed in his massive F250 King Ranch into the perfect spot in the middle. We then proceeded to blow up a queen size air mattress that fit perfectly in the bed of the truck. On top we added multiple blankets and pillows. Not going to brag, but we had the best setup out of everyone! Everyone kept coming by to compliment us!
Snacks
Another very important aspect of the drive in movie is the snacks. We could buy our own, however I thought it would be fun to bring our own and it ended up being WAY cheaper!
My go to movie snack is popcorn and M&Ms. This is my favorite salty/sweet snack combo! We brought 3 different flavors of Skinny Pop Popcorn: Original, Kettle, and White Cheddar. With only 100 calories per snack bag we didn’t feel as guilty in indulging on our movie snack.
We also had a variety of other snacks in case popcorn didn’t do the trick. Insert Cheez Its, Pretzels Thins, and Oreos.
To top it all off we stopped at a gas station and picked up some Slurpees because that just felt like what we needed to do!
What to wear
When going to the drive in movies, you want to aim to dress cute and casual. I rocked my Syn(aesthetic) custom made tie dye shorts, and a basic gray cropped tank. I love these ones from H&M. They are less than $5 and so easy to throw on. I have them in gray, white, pink, and black! Since full on pajamas is probably not the way to go, I thought this little set was a great choice.
I would throw in a sweatshirt because if we didn’t have blankets I would’ve been a little chilly. Since the sun doesn’t go down until 9:30pm, the first movie didn’t start until 9:35pm. It was so fun to watch the sunset before the movie, and then look at the stars while enjoying the film.
Also don’t forget bug spray!
Overall, it was the greatest date night! We mixed it up, and didn’t stick to our normal dinner and drinks. We had so much fun, and I highly recommend going to the drive in movies this summer!
