Who doesn’t love a good road trip? With the official first day of summer last week, my mind is full blown summer mode. Even though summer will look different this year, doesn’t mean that travel has to completely stop. As you know traveling is my favorite thing to do, and any opportunity I get to go somewhere I jump on it.
Summer vacations do not have to be canceled this summer however. Road trips are a great way to get in your summer vacation! I went on a trip to Savannah, GA (travel guide here!) with my mom at the beginning of the month, and I am excited to see what other summer getaways I can fit in.
My life with Mitch is one big road trip practically. We are always in the car, especially this summer: all over the state of Kentucky, Indiana, and wherever his job takes us. We are constantly on the road for his work so we rarely take a road trip for fun.
However, we have mastered road trips – from the snacks to packing to gas station trips, we got it down pat! For me, I need a salty and a sweet snack. My go to gas station order is Smart Food Popcorn and Reese’s. But sometimes I am all over the place and pick the most random snacks. Mitch is a fan of beef jerky and honeybuns.
Summer is such a good time to hop in the car for a road trip for so many reasons. Whether with your friends, S.O. or family, buckle up and go somewhere!
5 Reasons To Take A Summer Road Trip
1. IT WILL SAVE YOU SOME $$$
Take a drive, don’t fly! Instead of spending all of your money on airfare – hop in the car and save that extra cash for a nicer hotel or extra activities at your destination! From the price of the ticket itself to paying for checked bags, uber rides and etc – you’ll save a ton! We flew to Savannah, and felt very safe, but if you are not ready yet, then definitely stick to a road trip.
2. IT ENCOURAGES SPONTANEITY
It may be too late to book a last minute flight, but it is never too late to pack up your bags and start driving. I love the fact that you don’t even have to be going some place far!! It could be just a quick and easy trip to the lake. You’re not on a timed schedule and you can sight see and do what you please along the way. You could even bring your pup along with you for the adventure!
3. YOU’LL GET TO SEE/EXPERIENCE MORE PLACES ALONG THE WAY
My advice is to take the scenic route and get off the highway. We live in a such a diverse, beautiful country and there are so many places, things and small towns (with so much character) to experience along the way! Stop in these towns, try their food, talk to the locals and learn a little bit about their history!
This is my favorite part about road trips – experiencing what you didn’t know you were going to experience. Some of the best memories are pulling off and exploring the hidden gems along the way to our destination.
However, when we are traveling for work pulling over and exploring is limited. If we are in a hurry, we only stop for minimum potty breaks!
4. IT WILL GIVE YOU AN OPPORTUNITY TO BOND WITH OTHER PEOPLE
Let me tell you from first hand experience, spending hours upon hours in a small space with others, really encourages you to bond and get to know them! Whether you’re driving with your friends, family or even strangers – road trips bring laughter, deep discussions and loud sing alongs that would bring anyone together.
Mitch and I always try to solve the world problems when we are in the car together for long amounts of time. We talk about our goals, future and everything in-between. Right now it is a lot of wedding talk!
5. YOU’LL MAKE MEMORIES TO LAST A LIFETIME
You know the famous quote “It’s not about the destination but the journey”? While it can be used in many different contexts, it definitely applies to this one – literally and figuratively. From the bonding moments with everyone you’re driving with, to disasters that might strike, the sights that you will see, and the laughs along the way. You’re sure to make a million memories that you otherwise wouldn’t get to.
Where are you headed to on a road trip this summer??

Love going on road trips. Recently took a day trip to Savannah which is 4 hours away and had an amazing time. . It’s such an easy place to fall in love with. I like the old architecture gardens, the squares with the falcons and the Spanish moss and southern oak trees and the beaches nearby. Also got to dine at The Grey which we found through https://www.visitsavannah.com/list/these-5-savannah-restaurants-are-worth-traveling Definitely one of the best food experiences I have ever had!
