The Texas Hill Country in Fredericksburg is the largest wine region in Texas making it an awesome destination for wine tasting. Whether you are spending a whole weekend, or just a day trip from San Antonio (like we did), if you are a wine enthusiast, then Fredericksburg is a must do!
We decided to spend the whole day in Fredericksburg and we are so happy we did! It was only about an hours-ish drive from San Antonio.
We started our morning at Twisted Sisters bakery for some breakfast tacos and one of their massive cinnamon rolls! This is a great breakfast spot to check out before starting your wine tastings! It is located right downtown as well.
Before our long day of wine tasting, we decided to stroll down Main Street, and this was one of the highlights. Boutiques, western shops, cafes, home decor stores, bars, just about anything you would imagine in a small town USA Main Street! Definitely stop at The Mercantile – it was so cute we stopped twice!
After our shopping we headed out to our wine tastings. Here are the wineries we stopped at!
I highly recommend making reservations for wine tastings!
4 Wineries To Check Out In Fredericksburg
Augusta Vin
Augusta Vin Winery is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg and one of Texas’ premier estate wineries. The winery sits on a beautiful piece of historical land with a 60-acre vineyard and a 2-story tasting room.
This was by far the prettiest winery we went too! The grounds were just gorgeous and they had tables on a lawn, patio, inside, and a 2nd floor.
Augusta Vin Winery is a 100% Texas grown and produced winery known for its dry red wines. At Augusta Vin Winery, it is not about consuming wine but enjoying every sip as an experience for your palate. The pours were extremely tiny, but still tasty! The wine tastings are an educational and concierge-style experience guided by a friendly and knowledgeable staff member.
Fat Ass Ranch & Winery
We went obviously because of the name! The name says it all – Fat Ass Ranch and Winery is a fun and out of the “ordinary” winery experience. It’s super fun, perfect for a girls trip or a bachelorette. They have NO rules with their wines. Their wines tend to be very fruity and very sweet. Some were even too sweet for me. A tasting is $10 and you get a free glass to take home. On Saturdays, it is a real party here too. They have live music and food trucks for everyone to enjoy.
Guests might come to Fat Ass Ranch and Winery for the famous peach wine or frozen sangrias, but they definitely stay to have a good time. Which is exactly the goal the winery wants to achieve! They want all of their guests to feel welcome and relaxed with no judgment on the type of wine they enjoy.
The moment you step foot on the property, you can feel the fun Texas ranch atmosphere. From the horseshoe pits to the silos, wooden fences, and pickup truck benches – everything fits the theme of the winery perfectly.
Baron’s Creek Winery
Barons Creek Vineyards is one of the newest wineries in Fredericksburg, Texas. While the wine is delicious here, it is one of the best wineries in Fredericksburg because of its atmosphere. It gives off European villa vibes.
The entire property is gorgeous with at least five different areas to enjoy their wine. Outside the main tasting room is a fire pit and a gorgeous fountain to gather around. To top it off, on Saturdays, there is live music outside to complete the ambiance.
Y’all know I love rosé, and that is their best seller, and it did not disappoint! We ordered a hummus, and were disappointed that is came in a plastic tray, the presentation was not there compared to how fancy the winery itself was.
Heath Sparkling Wines
If you are a sparking wine fan, this is a must stop! Heath Sparkling Wines is the first winery in Texas dedicated to producing only sparkling wines. Heath Sparkling Wines is the “champagne of Texas.”
The winemaker uses the traditional champagne method, consisting of a three-year process from the ground to the lips to produce each sparkling wine. They offer a unique “multi-sensory” tasting experience which involves the champagne flight paired with a perfectly selected accompaniment, in addition to a virtual tour. The small bites of food change seasonally and completely change the taste of the sparkling wines. First, you taste the sparkling wine, and it’s fabulous, but then you take a bite of food, sip the wine again, and the flavor of sparkling wine is elevated.
Then, you can just head on over to Grape Creek Vineyards on the same property and check out some of their award winning wines!
However, you know I am a beer girl at heart….
Altstadt Brewery
In the middle of our wine tastings we had to stop at the brewery! Altstadt Brewery is everything you want in a German brewery. It looks like a castle so it fits in perfectly with all of the wineries. This is a great stop if you are with your man, you are also a beer lover, or just need a pretzel to soak up all of the wine. We enjoyed a flight and a pretzel and it was just what we needed.
Hill Top Cafe
We stopped here after the wineries and it was probably our best meal of the trip! Don’t be alarmed when your GPS tells you you have arrived, because it is just off the side of the road in an old gas station. Bluesman Johnny Nicholas’ eclectic American eatery in a funky 1930s gas station with live music. But the food is so so good. We had the special of blue crab stuffed shrimp, and it was heavenly it was so so good! We stayed for the live music, and it was just a lovely evening!
Be sure to include Fredericksburg in your Texas travels!
