Too old for trick or treating? Don’t fret — one of the best parts of being an adult in October is putting a 21+ spin on Halloween traditions.
I am personally not a big fan of Halloween. You will not catch me at a crowded bar probably ever on Halloween. I am more about snuggling up with candy, popcorn, Hocus Pocus, passing out candy, and a relaxing night in. This year I am actually doing a Halloween candy and wine pairing at Evolet Eve. If you want to join get your tickets here! I thought it was such a fun idea that I was going to doing a pairing myself!
I thought it would be fun to pair some classic Halloween candies with the best wine varieties, so we can easily make the night go from spooky to tipsy.
1. REESE’S PEANUT BUTTER CUPS
I of course had to start with my favorite candy ever! Pair your peanut butter cups with a dark jammy red like Cabernet Sauvignon. The dark fruit flavors complement the nuttiness of the peanut butter, while notes of cocoa pair well with the chocolate. Bonus points if you have the Reese’s pumpkins!
2. CANDY CORN
You either hate them or you love them. There is no in-between. I like pairing my candy corn with peanuts for a sweet and salty mix. Pair these sweet little treats with something sparking like Prosecco!
3. HERSHEY BARS & M&MS
O two classic Halloween candies. You can never go wrong with milk chocolate. When it comes to melt-in-your-mouth milk chocolate, go with a light- to medium-bodied fruity red like Pinot Noir and Merlot. The fruit notes in both of these wines pair well with gooey milk chocolate.
4. SKITTLES & STARBURTS
When it’s time to taste the rainbow, pour a glass of off-dry rosé. Actually this goes for any fruity candy. Rosé will be the perfect compliment.
5. SNICKERS & MILKY WAY
I’m not here to debate which one is better, I am a fan of both! But if you are looking for a wine to enjoy with these, a dry red blend is your best bet. It takes a special wine to pair with the strong flavors of caramel, peanuts and milk chocolate. A dry Cabernet Sauvignon red blend should do the trick.
6. SOUR PATCH KIDS AND SOUR GUMMY WORMS
Whether you prefer consuming your sour candies in worm, kid, or Warhead form, the mouth-puckering taste of a sour candy calls for a juicy, fruit-centric wine like a Sauvignon Blanc. The fruitiness will balance the sourness making it the tastiest combo.
7. KIT KAT BAR
No Halloween night would be complete without breaking off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar. These milk chocolate covered wafers pair well with Pinot Noir or Merlot.
What’s your favorite Halloween candy and wine pairing!? Happy Halloween witches!
