The long transition between winter to spring can be agonizing when the cold seems to drag on forever. Not to mention all the snow we have gotten this winter! After all, cold weather is fun until the holiday season is over. By February the snow turns to slush, you don’t remember the last time you saw the sun, and walking outside feels more brutal every day.
What makes it worse is that the transition for your wardrobe. It’s so easy to get stuck in the rut of only winter clothes, with no spring in sight–what do you wear during those in-between days that aren’t warm enough for a dress, but not cold enough for a parka? Just because the weather may not feel like it, doesn’t mean spring isn’t here!
And now we are finally on the cusp of spring, so let’s go through that winter closet and pull out the florals, brights, and a favorite dress! Here are 9 hacks to help you navigate this transitional season with style and ease.
1. Brighten up Your Outerwear
Okay, so being brutally honest we may need to stick with the bulky sweaters and coats for a little while longer. But switching to a spring-friendly color palette makes the bulky outwear seem less wintery, and warm weather feel like it’s coming *sooner. Ditch the blacks and grays for pastels and bright colors. For extra style points, wear your jacket over your shoulders (which is another transition hack in itself).
2. Utilize the Sweater + Skirt combo
The beginning of spring means it’s time to swap out your pants for an airy maxi or midi skirt. But before you immediately disqualify your big chunky sweater and toss it into the “see you next winter” pile, try wearing it in a new way. Paired with a pretty and feminine skirt instead of your same old pair of pants, you’ll look ready for spring. If it is too chilly for bare legs, throw on a pair of tights! I styled tights 9 different ways here!
3. Get Yourself Some Mules
Ah, mules– the perfect transition shoe. Half bootie (hello, winter slush), half sandal (so close to warm summer evenings!), a pair of mules is your perfect heel for work or a night out, weather-appropriate while appearing dressier than your typical booties you wore too much in the winter. Say goodbye to snow boots!
4. Wear All Your White Clothing
White sweaters go perfectly with winter staples! But there’s something about white accessories that feels so fresh and spring-y. A pair of white sneakers or a crisp white purse can make outfits in even the coldest temperatures feel like a spring look. Make it an all-white ensemble and you will look like you’re totally ready for the new season.
5. Trade in dark jeans (try light wash denim).
Slowly brighten your wardrobe by moving denim toward a lighter, brighter wash. I personally gravitate towards a lighter wash denim anyways. But during the spring transition time is the perfect time to sport light denim.
6. Don’t Forget About Your OTK Boots
You know those summer dresses and skirts you just can’t wait to pull out of the back of your closet after the long winter? But on the other hand the weather is not quite as dress-ready as you are? You don’t have to wait pull them out – pairing dresses and skirts with over the knee or riding boots is the perfect way to stay warm and look weather appropriate. Best part is you don’t even need a summer glow! The boots will keep your legs warm and hide how pale you are! It’s a win win in my book!
7. Wear Layers with Lighter Fabrics
We may need to stay covered through the cold temperatures of early spring, but that doesn’t mean our clothes should be in winter material. Transition into lighter fabrics for long layers and pants. Swap your wool peacoat for a trench, your bulky sweater for a lighter knit, and your thick jeans for airier pants.
8. Invest In A Great Trench
Trench coats are so classic, chic, and not only beautiful but also super functional–it’s water resistant. A trench coat is the perfect weight and length for transitional weather, especially if you need to spice up your closet. This is a key piece to throw on over a flirty dress for when it’s too cold to stand alone or over a silk blouse and mules.
9. Accessorize With New Colors
In the winter, it is easy to get drawn to black, cream, and camel. Those are typical winter colors. But right around this time, I really crave a bit of color and I’m dying to bust out my spring clothing (even when it’s too cold to actually wear anything other than sweaters and jeans?) I find that a happy medium is to turn to some colorful accessories. Think silk scarfs, felt hats, beanies, and sunnies!
