Happy Earth Day! O what a beautiful planet we have, and I can’t wait until I can explore more of it (yay for vaccines!). But there’s no better time to take a closer look at those seemingly harmless daily activities that may actually be leaving a big carbon footprint. Now, I will admit I am not the most sustainable person on this planet, but now is a great time to make some simple changes to be more eco-friendly.
If there’s one thing I’m not good at myself, but so respect when I see others doing it, it’s researching through the world of toxins, chemicals, and all that other stuff in the pursuit of living a more clean lifestyle.
Can I be honest? It just, quite frankly, overwhelms me. There is so much information out there, and as much as I love the idea of living a cleaner lifestyle, the thought of “figuring it all out” (if that’s even realistic) completely overwhelms me.
But going green doesn’t have to mean giving up all your earthly possessions: New products are making it easier than ever to be mindful of your impact.
I wanted to share a few little things I have been doing/plan on continuing to do to do my little part in helping our planet.
5 Tips For Living More Sustainably
1. Say goodbye to plastic
O dreaded plastic. This is something I have already tried to limit my use of and to my surprise it is super easy to do! I am actually obsessed with metal straws because they keep your drink SO COLD! Here are some simple things you can use to reduce your plastic use:
- Drinking straws
- Sandwich bags
- Shopping bags
- Water bottles
- Food containers
- Produce bags
My favorite plastic free items!
2. Shop at farmer’s markets
This is something that I have loved to do for years. Nothing like getting up early on a Saturday and heading to the local farmer’s market to see what fresh fruit and veggies you can find. I am a big supporter of shopping locally, and farmers markets are a great way to do that. Plus everything just tastes better! You never know what other goodies you will find- like fresh flowers, honey, cheese, pasta, candles- the possibilities are endless!
3. Use “clean” beauty products
I’ll admit that I’m a beauty novice. If you were to ask me if I know anything about what ingredients are needed to create a lipstick and what defines a product as clean, I’d shrug my shoulders. But this is something I definitely need to start doing more research in. If you have any clean beauty recommendations please send them my way! Some clean beauty brands to definitely check out are Beauty Counter, Summer Fridays, Plant Apothecary, Ilia Beauty, and Native Atlas.
4. Support sustainable fashion brands
Now this is something I have been gaining a better knowledge on, especially since I share so many finds with y’all on her and on my Instagram! Fast fashion is fun, but it’s time to slow it down and really consider the environment when shopping for new clothes and accessories. With so many sustainable and eco-friendly brands flooding the market, it’s not hard to budget for the eco-system while you shop.
A few of my favorite sustainable brands are HM Conscious, Summersalt, Outdoor Voices, Toms, and Nordstrom Sustainable
5. Recycle
Now, many of us feel like we don’t have time to recycle. It takes too long to sort items into the bins. We’re not even sure which container the thing goes in, anyway. I used to feel like this, as well. I always tried to recycle, but I didn’t pay too close of attention. Now I’m surprised I see recycling containers almost everywhere I go.
Also try to buy recycled products – in order for recycling programs to be effective, the recycled material have to be used for something else. This is an easy way to give back and make a difference.
Happy Earth day internet family. What are some ways you try to be sustainable?
